Region: Perak

Ayam Patah Kepak tanjak in black and gold songket, its rounded crest folded down to one side like a wing held close to the body.

Broken-Winged Chicken

The Ayam Patah Kepak rose to ceremonial prominence through its association with His Royal Highness Almarhum Sultan Azlan Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Yusof Izzudin Shah of Perak. Its name, meaning “the chicken with a broken wing,” refers not to weakness, but to the headgear’s distinctive silhouette, evoking a folded wing held close to the body. This subtle curvature symbolises resilience, quiet strength, and grace in the face of limitation. The form embodies a noble dignity: a calm, composed exterior that carries within it the memory of endurance.

Textile Description

This particular tanjak is folded from a handwoven songket textile crafted in Kuala Terengganu, using cotton and supplementary gold thread (kencana) on a rich Hitam Jebat (jet black) ground. The badan kain (main field) features the Teluk Berantai (chain-linked bays) pattern, adorned with motifs such as Bunga Kuih Potong Putu (traditional layered sweets) and Bunga Cengkih (clove), symbolizing cultural richness and aromatic subtlety. The patak kain (centre panel) presents Pucuk Rebung Berjuang (confronting bamboo shoots) and Pucuk Rebung Kendung (coexisting bamboo shoots), alongside a variant Pucuk Rebung motif and the Pending, a protective belt buckle motif symbolizing readiness and honour. The kaki kain (border) completes the composition with unidentified floral forms, adding a layer of mystery to the otherwise structured design. Together, textile and form unite in a headpiece that is both sculpture and statement—a tribute to poise, memory, and enduring inner power.
